°°We succeeded to develop a new method of dispersing PPDND (primary particles of detonation nanodiamond) in crystalline°°polymers°°like°°poly(ethylene°°terephthalate)[PET]°°and°°Nylon°°6.°°The°°method°°should be generally°°applicable to any solid matrices, and the composite products thus obtained are expected to greatly improve breaking strengths and other material properties. An international patent will be applied soon (Osawa).
°ýDetermination of Rolling Frictional Constants
°°A Lissajous figure method for analyzing rolling friction was completed. The software is designed to use in conjunction with a nanospacer lubrication tester that we have been locally developing in the past few years. The complete system will be presented at the 2014 Nano Tech Exposition in Tokyo Big Site at the JST booth on January 29-31, 2014 (Sasaki).
°ýSemi-Quantitative Analysis of ZrO2
°°In the course of disintegrating tight agglutinates of PPDND by beads milling, surface fragments of disintegration medium (zirconia ZrO2) usually contaminate PPDND up to 0.5%. It has been generally difficult to remove nanozirconia from PPDND. As the first step toward elimination of contamination by ZrO2, we confirmed that semi-quantitative analysis of zirconia contamination in PPDND can be performed by using fluorescent X-ray method that uses cobalt as an internal standard (Yamanoi).

We organized one of the International Symposia,°»Nanodiamond-From Basics to Medical and Other Potential Applications°… (Symposium No. N) and completed with considerable success. There were 37 presentations, among them 9 were from Japan, 7 from Russia, 4 from US, 2 from Australia, and 1 each from Czech, Germany, France, Finland, Italy, Estonia and England. To our surprise, our Symposium was attended by about 70 audiences in average with active discussion. We interpret the unexpected popularity to indicate quickly rising interests in nanodiamond with scientific community. After our session ended, we arranged on the next day a bus tour for participants to our symposium to popular sightseeing spots of Kyoto like Golden Pavilion and Kiyomizu Temple with an English-speaking guide. We also organized a Mini Post Symposium on °∆Perspectives on Nanodiamond Application°« on Sept. 19 in New Miyako Hotel. Eight presentations were made to eager audience. The following companies gave generous donation to support these two Symposia, to which we express our deep gratitudes: Adamas Nanotechnologies Inc., Bravus Japan Corp., MRS, NanoGroup Co. °ýTwo proposals have been submitted to the Grant-in-Aids for Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education for the fiscal year of 2014 on October 2013. These are our first applications since we were granted a status of research organization to apply for the GASR in March 2013.
